ABC Regional Newspapers: July - December 2009 - 02/03/2010

The latest ABC data for regional newspapers reveal declines for the majority of newspaper groups and individual titles. The average circulation fall across the sector was 5.8% compared to the same period in 2008.

The figures, for July to December 2009, show that the Nottingham & Long Eaton Topper had the largest circulation of the titles, while the largest percentage increase was for the Sheffield Weekly Gazette.

  • The Nottingham & Long Eaton Topper was one of only three titles in the top ten to record an increase in its circulation of almost 213,000 copies after a 0.1% period on period increase.
  • The Sheffield Weekly Gazette and the Edinburgh Herald & Post also enjoyed rises, up 0.8% and 0.5% respectively. Sheffield Weekly Gazette's total now stands at nearly 131,000 copies, while the Edinburgh Herald & Post is up to more than 115,500 copies.
  • However, the Nottingham Recorder remains in second place with 151,000 copies, despite a 0.7% period on period drop.
  • The Wirral Globe suffered a 4.3% fall, to below 113,000 copies, while the Derby Express was down 11% to under 101,000 copies.
  • The Coventry Times witnessed the highest percentage decline, down by over 20% period on period to 88,700 copies.
  • The Milton Keynes Citizen shed 3.2% of its circulation over the period, while the Liverpool Echo was down by almost 4%.
  • The worst hit paper by circulation was Bracknell News, which saw its sales fall to 3,441, a 27.3% drop yoy.
  • The UK's biggest Sunday title Sunday Life, was down 5.5% at 60,057 copies per week while the Newcastle-based Sunday Sun retained its second place with 58,882 weekly sales, a 4.8% drop yoy.
  • The London Evening Standard reported a debut regional ABC figure of 236,075 for the H1 2009, with 61.1% of its circulation coming from paid-for copies.
  • Birmingham Mail, which wants to convert into a morning paper, was one of the worst-hit evening titles during the period, down 14.6% yoy to sell an average of 56,495 copies.
  • In Wales three of the nation's six daily titles suffered double-digit yoy declines. South Wales Echo in Cardiff was down 11.8% yoy, while another evening paper, South Wales Evening Post, fell 10.1% to 46,069.
  • In Scotland, Glasgow Evening Times suffered a yoy fall of 12% to 63,803. The Evening News in Edinburgh and Dundee Courier & Advertiser each lost just over 6% of their sales, down to 46,222 and 67,996 respectively.
